Tucson Meet Yourself started in downtown Tucson in 1974 (the same year as Buffalo Exchange!). The festival’s name explains its purpose—a chance for Tucsonans to meet the varied cultural communities that make up our city. Tucson Meet Yourself focuses on “presenting artists and communities that carry on living traditions rooted in a group’s own definition of identity, artistry, and cultural significance.” There are hundreds of booths featuring everything from info about the city’s new streetcar to food vendors serving every delicious delight you can imagine to folk artists of every tradition. There’s also live music, dance performances and even a fashion show presented by Buffalo Exchange!
The festival sees 100,000 attendees every year and we caught up with a few of them. Here’s the scoop on their awesome and individual, styles.
Gabriel, rocking a very Tucson southwestern style, was at Tucson Meet Yourself for a traditional Mexican-folk dance performance with Ballet Folklorico Pueblo Viejo.
We had to get Cesar’s picture when we spotted him wearing an All Souls Procession tee, available exclusively at Buffalo Exchange! Five dollars from each sale of these tees goes to the annual All Souls Procession, another amazing Tucson tradition.
Ellen was prepared for the heat with a darling wide brimmed straw hat. We went crazy for her put together polka-dot ensemble!
Aidan and Dylan love thrift shopping. Dylan’s amazing two-tone leather backpack is from Four Winds, a local Tucson leather goods company.
Susan is a both a long-time Buffalo Exchange shopper and a long-time Tucson Meet Yourself attendee. We were enticed both by her laid-back style and the tempting plate of food she had just picked up!
Maria and Victor, in addition to being fans of Buffalo Exchange, love hitting up the shops along Fourth Ave. Maria got her adorable retro-inspired butterfly glasses from Urban Outfitters.
Kit comes to Tucson Meet Yourself every year to see people having a good time and to dance to the excellent live music. He custom painted his attention-grabbing shirt.
Even the volunteers at Meet Yourself were working it! Braelyn matched her volunteer tee with her favorite pair of vibrant green Converse.
