How to Sell Clothes at Buffalo Exchange in Just 2 Easy Steps

By Jessica Pruitt, Buffalo Exchange HQ

We know it can sometimes seem intimidating to sell clothes at your local resale store – it’s enough work just to clean out your closet, let alone figure out which items will sell and which won’t. Well, leave that part up to us! All you need to do is bring your clothes (shoes and accessories, too!) into your local Buffalo Exchange and get paid. Even better, take the trade and shop for new-to-you finds!

Step 1: Bring In Your Items

To sell clothes at Buffalo Exchange, the process is super easy. Simply clean out your closet and bring in the items you’re no longer wearing. We buy men’s and women’s clothing, shoes and accessories, the best of all seasons, year-round. Style and good condition are more important than brand, so bring in your whole cleanout, from designer to name brand to no-brand.

Stop in to see us anytime we’re open – we buy all day, every day and there’s no appointment needed to sell. Make sure to bring along a government-issued ID like a Driver’s License or Passport (and an adult if you’re under 18).

Step 2: Get Paid in Cash or Trade

When you get to the store, we recommend hanging out with your Buyer as they take a look through your cleanout. For each item we’re able to take, your Buyer will let you know our selling price. From that, you’ll get 30% in cash or 50% in store credit. For example, if we price an item for $20, you’ll receive $6 in cash or $10 in trade on-the-spot. If you decide you’d rather hold onto an item, no problem – just let your Buyer know! We do need to see items in person in order to say whether or not we can buy them and offer you a selling price, so we always recommend stopping into the store with any items you’d like to sell.

Trade Up: After You Sell Clothes, Go Shopping

We’re going to let you in on a little secret: trade is the way to go! Even if you’re trying to cut down on clutter overall, trading your cleanout in for a few new-to-you finds is a great (and often free!) way to make your closet feel brand new again. Not to mention that it’s environmentally friendly. Pro Tip: When it comes to cash and trade, you have options. You can buy a few pieces and take your remaining value in cash or even take a trade card for later. Just head to the register before you leave to pick up your cash, trade or any combination of the two!

How Does the Selection Process Work?

Buffalo Exchange How to Sell Clothes Buyer Analyzing Racks

At Buffalo Exchange, our Buyers go through a lengthy training process to learn about clothing construction and brands, price points and what kinds of items sell well in the store. After that, they analyze our racks daily to see which items have been selling quickly and which ones have been sticking around.

Our Buyers also talk to customers to find out what styles they’d like to see more of. It’s our goal to offer something for everyone – that’s why we buy current trends, vintage, one-of-a-kind items, inclusive sizing, everyday staples, men’s fashion and more. When our Buyers aren’t helping customers or reviewing our inventory, they’re often doing research on brands and current trends. As a result, our staff is a wealth of fashion knowledge! Ever wondered why they’re buying certain items from your pile and passing on others? Just ask! We love to talk fashion.

  1. Is there a formula for payout – I have NWT items that retail over 100.00 – is there a formula (not keeping you to it) to determine what I think you would give me each piece? I have lots and lots.

    1. Hi Kimberly,

There is no formula for how we price an item – we have to see it in person and then we buy based on the style and condition of the items, as well as what the store needs. When it comes to being paid out, you get 30% of the price back in cash or 50% back in store trade. So if we were to price an item to sell for $10 in the store, you would get $3 in cash or $5 in trade. It sounds like you have some great items in your closet, so I recommend stopping by your local Buffalo Exchange and our Buyers will be happy to take a look! If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

    1. Hi Anna,

We buy based on style more than brand, but we’ve taken items from these brands in the past. We need to see all items in person to say whether or not we can buy them, so we recommending bringing in any clothing and accessories you’re cleaning out and our Buyers will be happy to take a look!

    1. Hi Jah,

We buy in items all depending on style and condition. While our customers are often interested in styles similar to those that have been in retail stores within the past few years, we don’t have any specific time restrictions. We also buy in vintage and fun and funky pieces. We need to see items in person to say whether or not we can buy them, so I recommend bringing any clothing and accessories you’re cleaning out into the store – our Buyers will be happy to take a look!

    1. Hi Lola,

Thanks for inquiring! Our customers tend to be more interested in shopping for casual pieces as opposed to office wear and evening gowns. We need to see all items in person to say whether or not we can buy them in, so I recommend heading down to our New Orleans location at 4119 Magazine St – our Buyers will be happy to take a look at any clothing and accessories you’re cleaning out. Please let us know if you have any further questions!

      Best,
      Jessica

  3. I have 2 pair of barely worn (twice each) men’s Ariat cowboy boots that were very expensive (silly impulse buy). They are still current in their catalog. Would these be something that you might take? Thank you. I’m in beautiful San Francisco.

    1. Hi Rick,

We do buy in Ariat cowboy boots, just depending on the style and the condition. We buy all day, every day, so we recommend bringing in your items to have one of our buyers take a look! If we’re able to take the boots for the store, you’ll receive 30% of our selling price in cash or 50% in store trade. Hope to see you soon!

      Best,
      Savy
