Buffalo Exchange Sell By Mail Closet Cleanout Guide

The Ultimate Closet Cleanout Guide: 7 Tips for Getting Organized & Selling Your Clothes

By Jessica Pruitt, Buffalo Exchange HQ

Cleaning out your closet is already a long-procrastinated chore, but once you have everything sorted into “Keep”, “Sell” and “Donate” piles, what next? If you’re anything like me, you’re probably ready to pour yourself a tall glass of wine and veg out for 3 days straight. Fortunately, with Buffalo Exchange’s Sell By Mail option, you can pretty much do just that. You simply request a Sell By Mail bag online, fill it with your closet cleanout and then drop it off with UPS. Voila! No more piles of clothes covering your living room floor. Plus, next thing you know, you could have cash or a Buffalo Exchange store credit card being sent straight to your mailbox!

How to Get Started with Your Closet Cleanout

Buffalo Exchange Sell By Mail Closet Cleanout Pile of Clothes

If you haven’t done a closet cleanout in a while, we recommend going Marie Kondo on your wardrobe: this means taking every single item out of your closet, giving the whole thing a good wipe-down and then only putting back the pieces you truly love. Emptying your closet completely may seem overwhelming, but it makes it easier to evaluate every item, rather than just skimming off the top. Plus, it’s more fun than you would think to rediscover sequined party dresses, your favorite tees from high school and other items you completely forgot you had.

If you’ve cleaned out your closet within the past few months, you can instead remove only the items you don’t feel 100% sure about keeping. Need a little extra motivation to get started? Go shopping! It’s always easier to say goodbye to pieces you’re no longer wearing when you have new favorites to replace them with.

Wear Your “Maybes” One More Time

This is my personal favorite closet cleanout method. Start by pulling out any items you’re on the fence about – whether they’re in the never-worn-it, bored-of-it or forgot-I-had-this category. Over the next week, challenge yourself to wear each one of these items. Try mixing them up by adding a belt or a layering piece or even just a different pair of shoes. Best case scenario, you come up with a bunch of interesting new outfit combinations. Worst case scenario, you kind of dislike your outfit for the day. But hey, even this is a win because you’ll be able to toss the item into your Sell By Mail bag without hesitation.

Roast Your Closet

Buffalo Exchange Sell By Mail Closet Cleanout Men's Classic Style Outfit

It’s no secret that we all get by with a little help from our friends, so when it comes to your closet cleanout, don’t go it alone! Invite a group of your besties over for a closet “roast”. Have each person take one of the items you’re thinking about selling or donating and style it into an outfit. Then, set your friends up with sharpies and paper so they can vote, Olympic ice skating-style, and do a runway show!

Ultimately, it’s your opinion about the item that counts, but it can really help to have an objective opinion. Repay your friends by plying them with wine and takeout. When you’ve figured out which items to keep and which ones to sell, head down to Buffalo Exchange and sell your past favorites for new ones!

Try the Scarf Method

To gather some scientific data before diving into your closet cleanout, tie a scarf onto the hanging bar in your closet. Then, every time you wear an item, hang it back up on the other side of the scarf. This is a low maintenance way of figuring out which items you actually wear and which ones you’re just being hopeful about. Alternatively, you can try turning your hangers backwards every time you wear an item.

The Top 4 Closet Cleanout Questions

Buffalo Exchange Sell By Mail Closet Cleanout Bohemian Outfit

Ok, now for the fun part. Turn on a playlist of your favorite tunes and start trying stuff on. This is basically your own personal fashion show, so live it up! Dancing in the mirror and taking lots of selfies highly encouraged. For each item, consider the following questions:

  1. Does it still fit? If not, get rid of it!
  2. Have I worn it in the last year? Be honest. Unless it’s a special occasion dress or one-of-a-kind vintage, chances are you should sell it.
  3. Is it still my style? You’re constantly evolving, so why shouldn’t your closet follow suit? You may look super cute in the item, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll wear it again.
  4. Is it damaged? If so, will you repair it? If it will sit in a fix-me pile until your next cleanout, then it may be time to donate.

These can definitely be hard questions to answer, but they’ll help you find your way to closet cleanout bliss. If you find yourself getting stuck, call up your BFF for moral support!

Sell by Mail, Put into Storage or Donate

Buffalo Exchange Sell By Mail Closet Cleanout Bright Clothes in Bag

Once you’ve decided on the pieces you’re going to clean out of your closet, sort them into 3 piles: sell, store and donate. For anything that’s still in relatively good condition, pack it up into your Sell By Mail bag. Buffalo Exchange’s Sell By Mail program buys the best of all seasons, all year round, so if it’s a current, quality item in excellent condition, don’t worry if it’s out of season! For any out-of-season items that you plan on keeping, put them into storage bins rather than keeping them in your closet. Everything else can go in the donate pile to drop off at your favorite non-profit.

Spruce Up Your Closet

Buffalo Exchange Sell By Mail Closet Cleanout Beautiful Organized Closet

Now that you love everything in your closet, show it how much you care! Spruce up your closet with these tips:

  • Invest in some nice new hangers – either wood or slim velvet ones.
  • Store everything in plain sight – you’ll be more likely to wear items if you can see them.
  • Fold heavy items like sweaters and denim on open shelves in your closet.
  • Separate your clothing into categories like casual/weekend and dressy/workwear and sort by color.

Ahhhh, there’s nothing quite like a clean closet, is there? After you drop your Sell By Mail bag off with UPS, it’s time to sit back and relax! I don’t know about you, but I’m going to use all that extra free time to cozy up beside Fireplace for Your Home while doing a little online window shopping. After all, once my trade arrives in the mail, I’m going to be ready to shop up a storm at my local Buffalo Exchange.

5 Easy Ways to Live an Eco-Friendly Lifestyle

By Jessica Pruitt, Buffalo Exchange HQ

We all want to live eco-friendly and help make our little planet happy, but it can be easier said than done. When you’re tearing your hair out about how to sort your recycling or trying to take 3-minute showers, going green can seem impossible. Fortunately, living sustainably doesn’t have to be hard. With these easy-to-implement tips, you’ll be eco-friendly in no time flat – and even saving money while you’re at it!

Bring Your Own Bag

Whether you’re shopping for a new outfit or just groceries for the week, be sure to bring along a reusable bag. You’ll cut down on plastic bag pollution, plus you’ll be sure to catch the eye of that cute teller – after all, who doesn’t swipe right for eco-friendly? If you do end up with plastic or paper bags after purchases, repurpose them as garbage bags – you’ll save money AND give them a longer life! And hey, just between you and me, if you turn your paper bags inside out, they make cute (and way affordable) wrapping paper.

Before You Toss It, Reuse It!

Before you throw anything out, think about whether you can give it a second life. Plastic sandwich baggies can be rinsed out and reused and glass jars can become impromptu coffee mugs, salad jars or containers for foods from the bulk goods section. Just have the cashier weigh your jar before you fill it up with your favorite bulk goodies.

You can also make your recyclables into Pinterest-worthy craft projects like this adorable cat planter. Trust me – you’ll look like you’ve decorated your apartment exclusively from Etsy and Anthropologie without emptying your bank account. If you’re cleaning out your closet, there are easy ways to repurpose clothing you’re no longer wearing – sell it at a resale shop like Buffalo Exchange!

Then take a page out of the old bard’s book and dress as Hamlet or any renaissance character.  Find a poofy sleeved shirt for men and be sure throw on those tights! Accessorize by carrying around a skull like we did at Buffalo Exchange Bellingham. Romeo and Juliet also makes a great – but tragic – couples costume.

It may not be quite as easy to find a sweet old mansion if you live outside of NOLA, but guaranteed you can put one of these monochromatic looks together in no time.

The Bob’s Burgers cast is one of the easiest to replicate with street clothes – and makes for a great group costume as well!

For Linda: Find a long-sleeved red or orange tee, a white waist apron (could be DIY’d out of a white skirt) and red glasses. Throw on a pair of Converse or Vans, part your hair down the center and voila!

For Bob: You’ll need gray slacks, a white tee and dark-colored shoes. With a mustache and a fake burger (optional, but a pretty good prop), the costume is complete!

For Louise: This one’s super simple – all you need is a green dress and a pink hat. You can even DIY the ears on the hat with pink felt.

For Tina: You can find a blue tee and a denim skirt by shopping the racks at Buffalo. Just add a pair of black-framed glasses, tube socks and a yellow barrette.

For Gene: Yellow tee, denim shorts, red Converse. ‘Nuff said.

Buffalo Exchange Shopaholic-Turned-Tradeaholic

Spend Less, Score More: Confessions of a Shopaholic-Turned-Tradeaholic

By Savannah Timpani, Buffalo Exchange HQ

Yes, it’s true – a tradeaholic is a real thing. A tradeaholic, though, is quite different from a shopaholic. We LOVE shopping, but we get to enjoy it without all the negatives. For instance, we don’t have to jeopardize our bank accounts for that pair of boots we just HAVE TO HAVE. Instead, we tradeaholics have the luxury of sustaining our fashion finances by trading in our past favorites for new finds at resale stores like Buffalo Exchange, where our craving for new styles is indulged by the constantly changing inventory.

Here are the top four reasons why I’m proud to be a resale tradeaholic:

A Shopaholic-Sized Wardrobe without the Cost

Buffalo Exchange Tradeaholic Closet

Let’s be real. Who isn’t on a budget these days? Even with a steady income, bills, bills and more bills creep through on a daily basis. With so many responsibilities, there isn’t a whole lot left over to dedicate solely to fashion. Hence, the miracle of trade. No need to have all the cash in the world for a shopping spree. Instead, look through that closet and load up a bag of past favorites to sell at your favorite resale shop. Trade in for store credit towards some need-to-have pieces and VOILA, tradeaholic status here we come.

It’s Eco-Friendly

Buffalo Exchange Eco-Friendly Wardrobe

Saving the planet by trading out my closet? I’m in! By shopping secondhand, I can help reduce waste created from clothing pollution and manufacturing demands. Sounds like a win-win for Mother Nature and my ever-evolving wardrobe.

Upgrading Your Wardrobe is Quick and Easy

Buffalo Exchange Trade your Wardrobe

By shopping resale, I never have to wait to find new pieces. Ever.  Each and every day, resale stores get new inventory. Mind blown? Yeah, I feel you. Any time they’re open, Buffalo Exchange has Buyers busy selecting new pieces for the store. They offer sellers 30% of their price in cash or 50% in trade on-the-spot and then get the items out onto the sales floor that same day. They move so fast that I’ve shopped there in the morning, afternoon and evening all in one day and found new stuff every time. Clearly, the work of a tradeaholic is never done!
