Buffalo Exchange Shopaholic-Turned-Tradeaholic

Spend Less, Score More: Confessions of a Shopaholic-Turned-Tradeaholic

By Savannah Timpani, Buffalo Exchange HQ

Yes, it’s true – a tradeaholic is a real thing. A tradeaholic, though, is quite different from a shopaholic. We LOVE shopping, but we get to enjoy it without all the negatives. For instance, we don’t have to jeopardize our bank accounts for that pair of boots we just HAVE TO HAVE. Instead, we tradeaholics have the luxury of sustaining our fashion finances by trading in our past favorites for new finds at resale stores like Buffalo Exchange, where our craving for new styles is indulged by the constantly changing inventory.

Here are the top four reasons why I’m proud to be a resale tradeaholic:

A Shopaholic-Sized Wardrobe without the Cost

Let’s be real. Who isn’t on a budget these days? Even with a steady income, bills, bills and more bills creep through on a daily basis. With so many responsibilities, there isn’t a whole lot left over to dedicate solely to fashion. Hence, the miracle of trade. No need to have all the cash in the world for a shopping spree. Instead, look through that closet and load up a bag of past favorites to sell at your favorite resale shop. Trade in for store credit towards some need-to-have pieces and VOILA, tradeaholic status here we come.

It’s Eco-Friendly

Buffalo Exchange Eco-Friendly Wardrobe

Saving the planet by trading out my closet? I’m in! By shopping secondhand, I can help reduce waste created from clothing pollution and manufacturing demands. Sounds like a win-win for Mother Nature and my ever-evolving wardrobe.

Upgrading Your Wardrobe is Quick and Easy

By shopping resale, I never have to wait to find new pieces. Ever.  Each and every day, resale stores get new inventory. Mind blown? Yeah, I feel you. Any time they’re open, Buffalo Exchange has Buyers busy selecting new pieces for the store. They offer sellers 30% of their price in cash or 50% in trade on-the-spot and then get the items out onto the sales floor that same day. They move so fast that I’ve shopped there in the morning, afternoon and evening all in one day and found new stuff every time. Clearly, the work of a tradeaholic is never done!

All About That Layering: Fall Outfits For The Guys

By Buffalo Exchange Portland (Downtown)

Now that summer is officially over, we’re more than ready for some crisp, cool weather. We’re so excited, in fact, that we put together some menswear outfit inspiration that makes us want to jump right into fall fashion (and maybe a big pile of leaves, while we’re at it). As always, we’re all about layering new trends with quality staples to put together fall outfits that feel fresh and exciting.

Laid-back Layering

Buffalo Exchange Men's Fall Outfits Layering

When it comes to fall outfits, you need to be able to keep comfortable in a wide variety of temperatures. To do this, layering is key! Throw a vintage denim jacket over a simple black and white graphic tee to keep you warm during chilly mornings. Personalize your jacket with pins or patches and, if the weather is especially cool, add a flannel button-up or a hoodie. Next, pair with slim khaki chinos and brown leather work boots for a laid-back but rugged look.

By Jessica Pruitt, Buffalo Exchange HQ

There are hundreds of reasons to love autumn – leaves turning to bright hues of red, orange and yellow, crisp fall air, cozy fires, pumpkin spice lattes and the start of the holiday season. TBH, though, the main reason is the return of comfy clothes and all of the new fall fashion trends. From plaid to retro athletic gear to the perfect accessories, we’re already clocking our favorite looks of the season.

Plaid About It

Buffalo Exchange Closet Cleanout

The Top 7 Tips for Cleaning Out Your Closet

By Jessica Pruitt, Buffalo Exchange HQ

Whether you’re a packrat or a minimalist, cleaning out your closet is a job and a half. All those decisions, all those pants you have to try to squeeze yourself into, the new 6-inch layer of clothing carpeting your bedroom floor…yeah, on second thought, think I’ll go for an episode of GoT and a glass of wine instead. Fortunately, with a few organizational hacks and little help from your friends, you can get your closet sorted with enough time to make it down to Buffalo Exchange, where you can sell your past favorites for cash or trade. Win, win and win!

Roast Your Closet

Buffalo Exchange Fall Editorial Looks

It’s no secret that we all get by with a little help from our friends, so when it comes to cleaning out your closet, don’t go it alone! Invite a group of your besties over for a closet “roast”. Have each person pick out their least favorite item in your wardrobe and style it into an outfit. Then, do a runway show of these looks, first setting your friends up with sharpies and paper so they can vote Olympic ice skating-style.

Ultimately, it’s your opinion about the item that counts, but this can definitely help you let go of items you’re holding onto for sentimental reasons or that you’re just on the fence about. Repay your friends by plying them with cocktails and takeout. Once you’ve decided which items to keep and which ones to sell, head down to Buffalo Exchange to trade your past favorites for new ones!

Cleaning Out Your Closet with Marie Kondo

Buffalo Exchange Closet Shoes

Ever since Marie Kondo published her take on all things organization, closet cleaning experts have been recommending that you start by removing ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING from your closet. If you haven’t cleaned out in years, this is a solid approach. It forces you to evaluate every item, rather than just skimming off the top, and gives you the chance to make your closet shiny and new (i.e. no more dust bunnies, shriveled apple cores and T-shirts from middle school hiding out behind your winter coats).

If you’ve moved on to the “maintenance” stage of closet organization, instead remove any items you don’t feel 100% sure about keeping and pile them on your bed. Need a little extra motivation to get started? Go shopping! It’s always easier to say goodbye to pieces you’re no longer wearing when you have new favorites to replace them with.

Try Wearing Your “Maybes” One More Time

Buffalo Exchange Closet Outfit

This is my personal favorite method for cleaning out your closet. Start by pulling out any items you’re on the fence about – whether they’re in the never-worn-it, bored-of-it or forgot-I-had-this category. Over the next week, challenge yourself to wear each one of these items. Try mixing it up by adding a belt or a layering piece or even just a different pair of shoes. Best case scenario, you come up with a bunch of interesting new outfit combinations and discover some new go-tos. Worst case scenario, you kind of dislike your outfit for the day. But hey, even this is a win because you’ll be able to toss the offending item in the sell pile without hesitation.

Buffalo Exchange Shopping on a Budget for Fall

Shopping Fall Style on a College Student’s Budget

By Moriah Masters

As a fashion marketing student, it’s important to me to return to campus in style. A back to school shopping trip is always in order, but being a college student, I have to stick to a budget. You know what that means – a trip to Buffalo Exchange! This year, I was looking for everything from 90s-inspired street style to dark bohemian prairie vibes. At Buffalo, I was able to put together three fall style looks that I absolutely love without going over budget!

Don’t Mesh with My Fall Style

Buffalo Exchange Mesh Dress

This feminine chic fall style is all about layering and uses lightweight mesh dresses that are great transitional pieces. In particular, I was looking for something with asymmetrical lines and ruffles, which are all the rage right now. At my local Buffalo Exchange, I ended up finding a mock neck mesh dress that fit the bill and layered it with items I already had in my closet. Since these dresses are sheer, layering is a necessity. For a more casual look, you could pair a mesh dress with a pair of shorts or jeans and a tank or bralette.

Luxe in Metallic

Buffalo Exchange Metallic

90s-inspired looks with high-shine? Yes please! Metallics were top on my list of fall style must-haves. Luckily, I found the perfect pleated skirt and paired it with a New York tank to achieve the vibe I was looking for. With metallics, it’s all about balance! Pick a statement piece and then dress it down with denim and a neutral-colored top.

Buffalo Exchange Atlanta Back to School Trends

3 of Our Favorite Back to School Trends

By Buffalo Exchange Atlanta

Shopping for back to school wardrobes can be quite the tall order. If you’re anything like us, you plan out your first-day outfit to a T, PLUS try to stock up on a solid selection of basics, PLUS pick up the year’s top back to school trends, all while staying under budget. Geez – say that five times fast. To help you out, we’ve put together a few of our favorite looks of the year, all crafted affordably with finds from Buffalo Exchange. Whether worrying about your GPA is (thankfully) a thing of the past or you’re still trucking your way through school, these looks are perfect for fall!

Camo Cameo

Buffalo Exchange Atlanta Camo

Camouflage has been on the radar all summer long, but it’s now available in a refreshing array of colors, including pink, fluorescent yellow and orange. Perhaps surprisingly, this is one of the more versatile back to school trends – if you want to dabble with camo, pick up a tee, hat or bag with the print. Otherwise, go for the most popular camo item, by far: a baggy, army-style pant.  Pair these with crop tops, graphic tees, band tees or mesh.

New Takes on Denim

Buffalo Exchange Atlanta DenimBuffalo Exchange Atlanta Denim Outfit

When we think of back to school shopping, we think of the hunt for the perfect jeans.  There’s nothing more classic than denim for fall, but you don’t have to stick to just jeans and a tee!  Interesting new back to school trends in denim are available this year: think frayed hems and distressing, embroidery, button-front skirts, overalls, jumpsuits and denim jackets for a full Americana look.  Denim looks especially good when paired with bandanas or covered with patches and pins.

Fall & Winter Denim Trends: Embroidery, Patches & Distressing, Oh My!

By Monica Eckhoff, Buffalo Exchange HQ

Fall and winter are no stranger to denim, but we’re seeing so many fun updates this season! Here are a few of our must-have denim trends hitting stores now.

Denim Trends: The Trucker Jacket

Buffalo Exchange Trucker Jackets

Denim jackets are a classic Americana staple in everyone’s closet, but this year we’re seeing fun customizations with patches, text, distressing and raw hem lines for that worn-in look. These are available in any wash you could want, including light washes, dark denim and, of course, black!

Denim Trends: How to Style Embroidered Jeans

Buffalo Exchange Embroidered Jeans and Bodysuit

Embroidery isn’t just for summer! We’ve paired these fun light wash, raw hem jeans with a dark tie-neck bodysuit and a simple matching rose beanie and wedges.

If you prefer a look that’s more casual but still totally cute, pair the same jeans and beanie with a fun ruffle sleeve tee and a denim jacket for some denim on denim action.

Buffalo Exchange embroidered denim and hoodie

For the sportier gal, we paired some darker wash step- hem jeans with a cropped choker neck hoodie. Add some comfortable sneakers and a backpack and you’re ready to head off to class.

Buffalo Exchange Christina Finding My Personal Style 3 Outfits

Finding My Personal Style

By: Christina Hebets, Buffalo Exchange HQ

I am a numbers person, the ultimate problem solver and, until recently, fairly fashion illiterate.  Fresh out of college, I came to Buffalo Exchange Headquarters for the opportunity to grow my career and jump head first into the working world. It didn’t take long before the fashion energy around me became contagious. In order to embrace my new environment and grow as a person, I decided to make it a goal for myself to “find my personal style”.

The Back Story: Before I Found My Personal Style

Rock Climbing in Krabi, Thailand

I am an avid rock climber, hiker and overall adventure seeker, so it had been a long time since I had thought of clothes as anything more than a necessity or protection against the elements.  As I looked at my old wardrobe, it seemed to range anywhere from high school clothes to comfy pants with holes and, most prevalently, athletic garb. Now that I had a grown-up job, I knew that it was time for the dreaded closet upgrade, but I didn’t know where to start.

I decided to begin with the most comfortable first step I could think of: a closet makeover. I feel stressed with clutter, so I couldn’t wait for a clothing purge.  If I hadn’t worn it recently, gone. If it didn’t fit, gone. And most importantly, if I didn’t feel good in it, GONE! It was like getting a haircut – I felt lighter and freer immediately.
