What You’ll Need to DIY Your Cactus Holiday Sweaters

The first (and maybe obvious) step is to get a sweater! You can sift through your closet to find one you don’t wear anymore or you can stop by your local Buffalo Exchange to pick one up – like we did! We found these cute, coordinating gray sweaters with statement sleeves for extra festive flair. While we were out-and-about, we stopped into the dollar store to get all of our crafting supplies. In total, we spent about $30 on this project for both sweaters and it only took about 30 minutes from start to finish. We had so much fun DIY-ing these sweaters that I think we found a new holiday tradition!

Supplies:

Sweater, Felt, Pom pom balls, Pipe cleaners, Hot glue gun and glue sticks, Scissors, Marker, Optional: Other crafty supplies like ribbon and glitter

Easy Ways to Save Money: Make Your Budget Resolutions a Reality in 2019!

By Savy Kroop, Buffalo Exchange HQ

It’s one thing to make a resolution to save more money, but actually doing it can be a whole different story. If I’m being honest, I’m definitely guilty of giving up on my New Year’s resolutions by February 1st (if not sooner…). So, to keep myself on track, I came up with some easy ways to save money and some tips and tricks for sticking to my budget!

2019, Budget, Saving Money

Write Down Your Budget

My first suggestion? Write down your budget. This might seem obvious, but being able to visualize your spending habits can be a wakeup call! If possible, share your goals with a close friend or family member – it’s always good to have someone who can hold you accountable, keep you honest and encourage you. For example, the last time I made a budget, I estimated $40 a week on eating out. My roommate just shook his head… we both knew it wasn’t true. If you’re looking for some easy ways to save money, it’s important to start out by being honest about your spending habits!

To get started, write your monthly income at the top and, below that, write down how much you’d like to save this month. Remember – any savings is good savings! Next, start listing out all your necessary expenses (groceries, rent, etc). You can distribute anything left over among your unnecessary expenses like shopping, eating out, going out with friends, health and beauty, and so on. The goal here is to end up at 0. If the amount is negative, cut down one or more of your “unnecessary” categories. At the end of the month, be sure to reevaluate – it can be hard to accurately budget at first, but you’ll soon get the hang of it!

Treat Yourself – at Home!

If you’re looking for easy ways to save money in the “going out” category, this is the resolution for you! I think we can all agree that treating yourself and spending time with your BFFs is important for self-care. However, going to the nail salon, getting brunch every Sunday or going out for fancy cocktails with friends can get expensive. I’m not saying to cut these things out of your life in 2019 – just choose to treat yourself at home every now and then! This year, I plan to organize weekly “treat yourself” nights with my close friends. And, since we all know that Sunday brunch is the best part of the week, I plan to organize weekly brunch potlucks!

Closet Cleanout, Buffalo Exchange

Easy Ways to Save Money on Clothes: Shop For Free!

Lastly, my absolute favorite thing to do at the beginning of the year is a wardrobe overhaul! I love to start fresh with my closet, but without spending a lot of money, so I clean out my closet and then head into Buffalo Exchange to trade in for some new-to-me finds. I always find a lot of pieces there that spark joy (thank you, Marie Kondo, for the tip!).

To start, really try to pinpoint your style – reflect on what you see yourself wearing for the new year and, once you have a clear idea, begin going through every item in your closet (yes, I said EVERY item). Begin sorting items into three categories: keep, sell and donate. Try only holding on to items that you truly love. Like Marie Kondo would say, “Keep only those things that speak to your heart”. Once you’re done, you’re ready to head to your local Buffalo Exchange!

You really can’t beat the prices of shopping secondhand, especially if you sell your closet cleanout and put the trade you receive towards your new-to-you finds. Talk about easy ways to save money (not to mention fun!). Phew! Finally, a New Year’s budget resolution that I won’t have any trouble keeping.  Well, that’s it from me – I’m off to plan a “treat yourself” Sunday brunch for me and my friends. Happy budgeting!

DIY Holiday Sweaters: Snow Globe Edition

By Savy Kroop, Buffalo Exchange HQ

Looking for the most festive sweater of all to rock this rock this holiday season? Stop into your local Buffalo Exchange for tons of cute and kitschy options. If you’re feeling a little crafty, though, try DIY-ing one of your own holiday sweaters. This snow globe sweater is unlike anything you can buy and will surely bring holiday cheer! For added fun, get a group of your friends together and make it into a craft night party.

Supplies, Stickers, Snowman, Hot Glue, Tinsel, Glitter, DIY, Crafting

What You’ll Need to DIY Your Snow Globe Holiday Sweaters

To start off, you’ll need to find the sweater you want to use as your base. Choose one from your closet that you’re no longer wearing or stop by Buffalo Exchange to pick one up – I found this cute gray sweater with pearl detailing at my local Buffalo and all of my crafting supplies at the dollar store. I spent under $20 on this project and only took about 30 minutes to complete! I don’t know about you, but I think I’ll be DIY-ing my own holiday sweaters from now on.

Supplies:

  • Sweater
  • Clear plastic bowl
  • Plush snowman (or any other festive toy – i.e. reindeer or an elf)
  • Tinsel
  • Fake snow
  • Snowflake stickers
  • Glitter
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Marker

Buffalo Exchange DIY Bag

DIY Bag: Turn Your T-Shirt Into a Reusable Tote!

By Savannah Timpani, Buffalo Exchange HQ

At Buffalo Exchange, we’re all about recycling our clothing and accessories – whether that means trading in our closet cleanout for cash or store credit or repurposing a T-shirt into a fun DIY bag! For an environmental win-win, take a T-shirt you no longer wear and turn it into a reusable tote bag to carry with you when you go shopping. This is the EASIEST DIY EVER, so why not make one this weekend? You can bring it to our Earth Day $1 Day Sale on Saturday, April 21 to carry home all your $1 finds!

What You’ll Need for Your DIY Bag

Buffalo Exchange DIY Bag Supplies

To make your DIY bag, all you’ll need is a tee of your choosing and some scissors. Did we mention this is the easiest DIY ever?

Step 1: Snip, Snip

Buffalo Exchange DIY Bag Step 1

Once you have your tee and scissors, you’re ready to get snipping! Start by cutting off the sleeves, including the seam, on each side.

Buffalo Exchange DIY Bag Cut Off Neckline

Next, cut off the neckline, including the seam. Keep in mind that, the lower you cut, the deeper the opening of your bag will be.

Step 2: Fringe It Out

Buffalo Exchange DIY Bag Cut Off Bottom Seam

Now that you have what looks like a rad tank, cut the bottom of the shirt horizontally along the seam.

Buffalo Exchange DIY Bag Add Fringe

Next, cut some slits vertically about 2-3 inches long and 1-2 inches apart all along the bottom. When you’re done, it should look like a fringey tank.

Step 3: Tie It Up

Buffalo Exchange DIY Bag Tie It Up Step 3

Onto the last step! Tie each piece of fringe with a double overhand knot and VOILA, the perfect tote bag! Extra style points for adding your favorite pins or patches.

Buffalo Exchange DIY Bag Finished Product

In case you didn’t know, Buffalo Exchange is a bagless company. This means that, instead of handing out plastic bags, we hand out charity tokens with each purchase. Fun fact: we’ve donated over $728,595 to thousands of local non-profits and kept over 14.5 million plastic bags from polluting the environment since starting our Tokens for Bags program in 1994. So next time you stop in to shop at your local Buffalo, bring your reusable DIY bag!
