Next time you see a piece of trash on the ground, you might just want to pick it up – you never know where it might lead! For Chris Hamrick, this simple good deed jump-started his career in retail management with Buffalo Exchange. Back in 2003, he was trying on clothes at his local Buffalo when he noticed a piece of trash on the fitting room floor. His retail background had taught him to notice this type of thing, so he went ahead and picked it up. This rare, helpful gesture caught the attention of the manager and, next thing you know, Chris was getting hired as a brand new Buyer at our Haight Street location in San Francisco.

Chris took to the job like a fish to water (or maybe a Buffalo to the plain?). He immediately found that he loved talking fashion with customers and meeting people from all different walks of life. He even started counting many of his regulars as friends. In particular, he remembers a customer who always came in to shop and chat but rarely walked away with anything. So Chris did what any good Buyer would do – he asked what the customer was looking for! When he found out the customer was shopping for streetwear gems, Chris helped his store to keep an eye out for these items. Even though Chris has a flair for vintage and is usually decked out in head-to-toe 70s, he loves fashion and found the process of learning about all different types of styles fascinating.

Within a few years of starting at the Haight Street store, Chris’s hard work and passion for helping customers won him a promotion to Buyer Expert and, just a year later, Buyer Trainer. But it didn’t stop there! In 2015, Chris transferred to our San Francisco Mission District location and jumped head-first into his career in retail management – he was quickly promoted to Associate Manager, then Store Manager. Now celebrating 14 years in the herd, he is excited for the fun new challenge of being a Store Manager. There’s always work to be done, but he knows he can succeed in his new role by focusing on the things that matter most: great clothes and great customers!
