It’s my first Mother’s Day being a mama and I can barely believe how fast the days have gone by. My little Luca will be exactly six months on May 13. He’s already grown so much and it’s so fun to see his personality come to life. For me, motherhood has been the greatest gift. I feel like my heart could explode with love and happiness nearly every day. But real talk, being a new mom has changed pretty much everything, including my personal style and outlook on life. Here are some lessons that I’ve learned over the past 15 months, all in time to ring in my first Mother’s Day in style.
Yay, We’re Pregnant! Wait… What?
When my husband and I found out we were going to be a new mom and dad, it came as a total surprise. I know now that he was THE BEST SURPRISE of my life, but I was totally unnerved at the time. We had planned everything out – when to get married, where to buy a house, when to have kids, etc. Everything seemed to be going according to plan and then BOOM, BABY! I was nervous and felt like it was way too soon. Looking back, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Luca came into our lives exactly when he was meant to. Lesson #1: Trust the timing of your life. There is no such thing as ‘perfect timing’ and everyone’s path in life is different and constantly changing. Rather than question it, go with the flow. You may be amazed at the outcome!
The Times They Are a Changin’
I loved being pregnant, but it was also pretty hectic for me. Not only was my body changing every day, but my heart, mind and home were also going through massive reconstruction. I’m talking from-the-ground-up type of remodeling. From buying little infant Converse (I just HAD TO HAVE THEM) to a changing table, we were getting more and more ready for Luca’s arrival. I already had an unreal amount of love for my little guy and felt an enormous amount of responsibility to protect and provide for him. As someone used to worrying only about myself, preparing to be a new mom made for some pretty major changes. Lesson #2: Change is good.
Finding My Style: From Newly Pregnant to New Mom
When it came to dressing during pregnancy, comfort became a top priority. My body changed a little bit each day, so at first, I felt a little disheartened and didn’t like what I saw when I opened my closet. Even though I wanted to be comfortable, I could never sacrifice style. I turned to trading at Buffalo Exchange to get me through. I cleaned out quite a bit in my closet that I didn’t think I’d be interested in as a new mom and traded it for fun new styles. Buffalo doesn’t have actual maternity clothes, but there are so many different brands, silhouettes and sizes that it was easy to find styles I loved throughout my entire pregnancy. When it was time to create my new mom wardrobe, I just swapped out the larger sizes that didn’t fit anymore and treated myself to some awesome pieces. Lesson #3: Your style can shine throughout your whole pregnancy.
If You Just Believe
To be honest, it wasn’t just our life plan that I questioned when we first found out about the baby. I wondered if I was ready to be a mom. As it turns out, I had a strength inside of me that had been waiting to break through. Lesson #4: Believe in yourself. Since Luca’s arrival, I have become a better version of myself. The selfish part of me has completely transformed into a fierce and loyal mama bear.
Celebrating My First Mother’s Day in Style
Nowadays, I dress for practicality with an edge. For example, I’ll choose a stylish crossbody suited for my on-the-go lifestyle rather than a handbag. I also have a newfound self-confidence to wear whatever I want and completely be myself. Lesson #5: You do you! Let your light shine wherever you go and don’t dim it down for anyone. You’re fierce and have so much to offer the world, whatever that may be.
