How to Sell Your Clothes

Buffalo Exchange How to Sell Your Clothes 3 Flat Lays of Men's and Women's Clothing

By Jessica Pruitt, Buffalo Exchange HQ

Whether your closet is overflowing (literally) or you’re just looking to make a little extra cash, you may find yourself wondering how to sell your clothes. It all starts with cleaning out your closet. Find out the top tips for reorganizing your closet and reselling your clothes at Buffalo Exchange.

1) Clean out early, clean out often

Capsule wardrobe specialists and minimal lifestyle gurus recommend cleaning out every three months – once per every season change. If you’re overwhelmed just thinking about it, try every six months. When you clean out, sort into three categories: out-of-season items to be stored away in plastic tubs, worn-out items to be donated and items to sell.

Remember that most clothing resale stores start buying for the upcoming season a few months in advance. At Buffalo Exchange, for example, we start taking Fall inventory in July. We also buy current, high quality items in excellent condition out of season.  Moving to Hawaii (you lucky duck!) and wondering what to do with the brand new Patagonia jacket you’ll never wear? Bring it in!

2) It’s in the bag!

Keep a brightly colored canvas bag in your closet designated for selling your clothes. If you try something on in the morning and you’re just not feeling it or – even worse – spend the day regretting your outfit choice, throw it in the bag! This kind of Marie Kondo maintenance reduces closet clutter on a daily basis and makes your outfit choice every morning so much easier. Why spend time repeating the same mistakes? Then, when you’re ready to go shopping, you’ll already have some clothes to sell for store trade!

3) Give everything a last look

Every item we buy needs to be ready to go straight out onto the rack. So, look at your items – especially your whites – under a bright light before you throw them in the bag. This way, you can spot treat them before you go and save yourself a second trip!

4) Don’t hold back

Sometimes the question is not just how to sell, but what to sell. Remember this golden rule: when in doubt, bring it in. We buy all sizes and we make selections based on style more than brand. We look for all kinds of fun and funky stuff as well as vintage, from classic rock tees to 50s dresses to early 00s gear (yes, we can hardly believe we’re already throwing back to the oughts). We also buy accessories like shoes, hats, bags and jewelry. Our buyers will be happy to look at everything you have and fashion changes at a fast pace, so you just might be surprised!

5) Get back to basics

On the other hand, some customers assume we only take vintage, retro and funky stuff. Not true! In fact, classic T-shirts and jeans are top sellers for us. Bring in those everyday staples!

6) Don’t be shy

When you have your closet clean-out packed up and ready to go, simply bring it into your local Buffalo Exchange, no appointment necessary. We operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so Monday mornings and weekends can get busy, but you generally won’t have to wait longer than 15 minutes. You need to bring a valid government-issued ID like a Driver’s License or Passport with you in order to sell and you do need to be over 18 (or with a friend or parent who is). We encourage you to hang out at the buy counter and chat with your buyer. This is the best way to learn how to sell your clothes: it allows you to see what kind of items we take, how we price them and the thought process behind it all. Don’t be afraid to ask your buyer questions! We love to talk about current trends, popular styles and how we buy.

At the buy counter, a buyer will look through all of your items and make selections based on style, condition and store needs. If they think any of your items will sell in the store, they’ll assign them a retail price. From that price, you’ll receive 50% in store trade or 30% in cash the same day you sell. We do have to see all items in person to say whether or not we can buy them for the store and what we can price them for, so we look forward to seeing you and your cleanout in the store!

Feel free to shop around when you’re done or simply take the cash. You can always mix and match – for example, you can buy a T-shirt or put some money on a trade card for later and get the rest in cash. Trade cards never expire and can be used at any location, so if you love to shop Buffalo, they’re the way to go. Whatever you decide, give your phone number at the register before you leave to claim your cash or trade.

FAQs

How do the payouts work when you sell clothes and when do I get paid? For any item we can buy for the store, we assign it a selling price and you receive 30% of that back in cash or 50% in store trade on-the-spot. We price items based on their style, condition and original retail value. You get paid asap – just head to the cash register before you leave!

How do you decide what to buy? We make selections based on styles that are selling well for us. We go through our inventory daily to figure out which items are selling quickly and which ones are sticking around.

Do you take all sizes? Yes, we buy all men’s and women’s adult sizes, including plus sizes. We do not buy children’s clothing or accessories.

Do you buy prom dresses or bridal wear? In general, our shoppers are more interested in cocktail attire and everyday dresses over formal items like prom dresses and bridal wear.

Do you buy suits? We do buy modern, slim-fit suits and blazers. It all depends on the style!

Can I send you a photo of my item to receive an offer? We have to see all items in person before we can say whether or not we’d buy them and assign them a selling price. Just head into your local Buffalo Exchange and one of our buyers will help you out! Not near a store? Try our Sell By Mail program!

What happens after I sell? After you sell clothes to us, your buyer will let you know your options for cash and trade. Feel free to shop around before making a decision. When you’re ready to go, just head to the register to pick up your cash, a trade card or any combination of the two. Many customers like to use their store credit to pay for a new find and take the rest in cash.

  2. I am assisting an elderly gentleman clean out his house. He was a ballroom dance instructor and competitor. He has some new clothing and some gently used clothing and accessories i.e., two tuxedoes, several suits, beautiful pants, leather jackets, suede jackets, and accessories. Are any of these items that you might be interested in buying?

  4. How “new” donthe items need to be? Do you except used shoes that have been worn? Also, is it worth it to bring in clothing that is not designer or high end, for example, Express, Gap, Old Navy, etc.?

    1. Hi Jamie,

Great questions! For the most part, our customers are interested in items that have been in retail stores within the past few years as well as vintage and fun/funky items. We do buy used shoes, depending on condition and style. We certainly buy brands like Express, Gap and Old Navy – again we go off style more than brand or anything else. Hope to see you in the store soon!

  5. Hello! I was wondering if you only take brand clothes like Forever 21 or H&M, because I have some clothes that may not be a branded clothing or there is a brand name on there but that brand isn’t a something that is popular to the people in the United States.
    Thank You

  6. Hello,

I was wondering what happens to the items that you guys do not decide to take in store as well as mail method? Would those be given/mailed back?

    Thank you,
    Jessica

    1. Hi Jessica,

Thanks for the question! In-store, you have the option to take any unpurchased items back with you or to donate them to local non-profits. Most of our stores have donation bins that customers are welcome to use, though they do occasionally fill up. Please note that we’re unable to offer tax receipts.

For Sell By Mail, you can opt to have unpurchased items returned to you for a $14.99 return shipping fee or have them donated to a Charity $1 Yard Sale.

I have some designer suits that I don’t wear anymore. These suits are in like new condition. I have Hugo Boss, Zenga, Canali, and Bernini. Is this something you would look at?

    1. Hi Earl,

We buy everything based on style and condition. Though casual-wear tends to sell best for us, we are always looking for awesome menswear. 14. Hi-

I had had a huge collection of my own clothes and then developed hopes of opening my own thrift store, but some things changed and now I just have lots of clothes I’d like to liquidate. Can I bring in like 100 t-shirts at a time? I also have upwards of 30 pairs of shorts, 20+ pairs of shoes, etc- is there a limit to sell in a day?

Also, for the 50 or so sweaters I have, how soon can I bring in them and other colder weather gear?

    Thanks!

    1. Hello!

There’s no limit to how much you can sell in a day, but if it’s your first time, I recommend bringing in a sampling just to get an idea of what we are able to buy for the store. We take the best of all seasons and will be starting to transition to fall this month. At this point, we’re looking for the best of summer, the best of fall and lightweight layering pieces to transition between the seasons. We make selections based on styles that are selling quickly in our stores as well as condition. Let me know if you have any further questions – hope to see you soon!

      Best,

      Jessica

    1. Hi Tamara!

  15. If we have items that are already in good condition, do they have to be freshly laundered as well before bringing them to sell/trade?

    1. Hi Ali,

Thanks for asking. The clothes we buy in go directly to the sales floor, so we ask that items be in good condition, cleaned and laundered. Feel free to bring any clothes you’re wanting to sell to your local Buffalo and our buyers can take a look at your items.

  18. Do you buy English creepers?.
I have vintage original made in England TUK creepers.
New in the box from 20 years ago, many styles and sizes.
All TUKs today are made in China.

    1. Hi Philip,

We make our selections based on style and condition more than brand, but TUK creepers are certainly ones we would consider. Feel free to bring them on in to your local Buffalo!

  19. Do y’all accept junior clothing? like Hollister and Forever 21? And also, I would like to sell a backpack that I used only once? I live about 35 min away from the Houston location and I would like to be 100% sure that I would get some cash on the spot. I would prefer to go there instead of the Sell by Mail program.

    1. Hi Karla!

We do buy junior’s clothing as well as accessories like backpacks, just depending on style and condition. With brands like Forever 21, we’re much more selective, since the items are more affordable brand new, but our Buyers would be happy to take a look at any clothing and accessories you’re cleaning out, regardless of brand. We do have to see all items in person before we can say whether or not we’re able to buy them, so we can’t guarantee you cash on the spot. That said, we would love to see you in the store! Coming into the Houston location to sell will give you a chance to chat with your Buyer and get a sense of which types of items we’re able to buy for the store. Let me know if you have any further questions!

      Best,

      Jessica

    1. Hi Roe,

One of our Buyers would be happy to take a look! Just bring along a valid ID. No appointment necessary, so stop by anytime we’re open. Look forward to seeing you soon!

  20. When a customer uses the mail program and you are not interested in purchasing the items will you donate them if requested or
do you return them to the seller?

    1. Hi Cynthia!

Good question. You can either opt to have us donate them or you can pay a $14.99 return shipping & handling fee to have us send them back.

      Best,

      Jessica

  21. Hi,

If I bring in a few vintage punk-rock shirts, would it hurt my chances of selling them if a few have some fraying and the occasional rip, or might that simply add to the vintage/distressed appeal? Specifically wanted to know if you had any hard-and-fast rules about not buying any ripped clothing or if they’re judged on a case by case basis. Thanks!

    H.

    1. Hi H,

We buy everything on a case by case basis, weighing desirability of style and condition. With vintage, we are sometimes more flexible with condition, just depending on the style of the piece and how severe the condition is. I recommend bringing them down to your local Buffalo Exchange – one of our Buyers would love to take a look!

  22. Greetings,
I’m new to Texas and have a ton of clothes. Do you buy or consign voluptuous(plus…lol) sizes? How do you determine the retail prices?

    1. Hi Marie,

Thanks for reaching out to us. We do buy plus size clothing based on style and condition. We’re always in need of great pieces for every size! We assign each item a price, then you receive 30% of that price in cash or 50% in store trade. Bring any clothing and accessories in to your local Buffalo any time we’re open and one of our Buyers will be happy to take a look at your items! We look forward to seeing you in the store soon.

  23. Hi there,
I just want to know that if I sell all the clothes I bring in to the store and wanted to get in-store credit instead of cash would that be okay?
Also how does that store card works?

    1. Hi Angie,

Thanks for reaching out to us. We’re always looking to buy great men’s and women’s clothing, shoes and accessories based on style and condition. We assign each item a price, then you receive 30% of that price in cash or 50% in store trade. You can decide which works for you and feel free to shop around the store after selling to see what finds you may score! You can check out at the register when you’re all done to put the trade towards any items you’d like to purchase or elect to have that amount loaded on a trade card that never expires. Visit your local Buffalo Exchange any time we’re open and one of our Buyers will be happy to take a look at your items! We look forward to seeing you in the store soon.

  24. Do u guys accept clothes that are worn out or have holes in them ? If not do u know if any place takes them.. i have a few but not sure if i should toss them or recycle them somehow.

    1. Hi Valery,

Thanks for reaching out to us. We buy all items based on their style and condition. Very worn items are ones we would pass on. However, we do support donating or recycling such items rather than tossing them. You can call your local Buffalo Exchange to inquire about clothing donations.

  25. Hi,
I have some clothes, sandals and business shoes. Do you accept all of them or you prefer winter clothes for now?
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Thao,

Thanks for reaching out to us! We do buy the best of all seasons based on style and condition. I recommend bringing the clothing and shoes you’re hoping to sell to your local Buffalo Exchange so our buyers can take a look at your items and give you more information about what their specific store is currently looking for. Hope to see you soon!

    1. Hi Kara,

Thanks for checking in! We buy based on style and condition more so than brand. In general, our shoppers are interested in items that have been in retail stores within the past couple of years that are in like-new condition as well as vintage and one-of-a-kind. I recommend bringing down any clothing and accessories you’re cleaning out – one of our buyers would be happy take a look! No appointment needed – just bring along a valid government-issued ID.

      Jessica

    1. Hi Vivian,

Thanks for thinking of us! Individual pieces like blazers or pencil skirts tend to sell better for us than full suits, but we do buy business attire depending on style and condition. We’d be happy to take a look at your suits, along with any other clothing and accessories you’re cleaning out. Hope to see you soon!

  26. Hi! Around how much do you buy clothes for? I know brand and condition must be taken into account but what would be a good estimate range?

    1. Hi Emma,

Thanks for the interest! The range varies, so it’s hard to give specific numbers, but in general, we strive to set a fair price for both sellers and our shoppers based on the desirability of the style, condition and original retail value. We pay out 30% of our selling price in cash or 50% in trade. We have to see all items in person before we can say whether or not we could buy them and what we could price them for, so hope to see you in one of our stores soon! There’s no appointment needed – just a valid government-issued ID. Let me know if you have further questions.

    1. Hi Kayla,

In general, wedding dresses and formal wear don’t sell as well for us as more casual cocktail attire. If you’re cleaning out some other clothing and accessories as well, though, you’re welcome to bring your formal items along. Our Buyers are always happy to take a look!

    1. Hi Char,

We don’t generally buy bras, though we will sometimes take bralettes in brand new condition. We always buy the best of all seasons, so you’re welcome to bring in your dresses. Out of season, we’re generally looking for high quality items in mint condition that have been in stores within the past couple of years. Just bring in any clothing and accessories you’re cleaning out and one of our Buyers will be happy to take a look! We look forward to seeing you in the store!

    1. Hi Karis,

We do sometimes buy these for our stores, but we have to see all items in person before we can say whether or not we could buy them and what we would price them for. I recommend bringing them down to your local Buffalo along with any other clothing and accessories you’re cleaning out. One of our Buyers would be happy to take a look. See you soon!

  27. Hey I have a lot of short sleeve and quarter sleeve shirts and dresses. I didn’t know if you still take those clothes during the winter months.

    1. Hi Skylar,

We always take the best of all seasons, meaning we sometimes buy high-quality, current items in excellent condition even if they’re out of season – think a brand new Patagonia jacket in July. We are buying more for fall and winter at the moment and more selective about the warm-weather styles, but if you’re doing an overall cleanout, feel free to bring them in! Our Buyers would be happy to take a look at everything. Hope to see you soon!

      Best,
      Jessica

    1. Hi Wen,

We buy items based on style and condition rather than brand only, but Alice + Olivia usually has pretty popular styles for us! I definitely recommend bringing any items you have in and our buyers will be happy to take a look. Hope to see you in stores soon!

      Best,
      Amelia

    1. Hi Chel,

We do sometimes buy bathing suits in brand new condition. If you bring them in, we will be happy to take a look!

    1. Hi Sole,

Thanks for your interest! Our maternity shoppers are usually interested in everyday pieces like oversized T-shirts and dresses rather than maternity-specific items, but if you’re doing a general closet cleanout, we would be happy to take a look. Let us know if you have any further questions!

      Best,
      Jessica

  28. If I dont agree with the price I’m offered for an item can I choose not to sell it and take it back home with me?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Jess,

Absolutely. Just hang out with your Buyer as they’re looking through your items. They’ll let you know our selling price of each item they can buy for the store. From that, you’ll receive either 30% back in cash or 50% back in trade. If you’d rather not sell the item for the amount you’ll receive, you’re always welcome to hold onto it. Hope to see you in the store soon!

    1. Hi Rebeca,

We do buy football jersey’s depending on the condition and style. I would say in general, we look for more everyday men’s wear, but if it is a super desirable jersey in great condition we sometimes take them as well! I recommend heading to your local Buffalo Exchange with the jersey and anything else you may be cleaning out and our buyers will be happy to take a look!

      Best,
      Amelia

    1. Hi Lala,

We do buy Uggs depending on style and condition, but we would need to see them in person to say whether or not we could buy them for sure. I recommend stopping into your local Buffalo Exchange. Hope to see you soon!

  29. should we bring coats in zipped or unzipped? shoes laced perfectly? buttondowns buttoned or not? whats the best way to sell items?

    1. Hi Eileen,

Thanks for inquiring! It’s always easiest for us to look at items when they are freshly laundered and neatly folded – having items zipped and laced may make it quicker for us to look at your items, but it’s certainly not a requirement. We recommend bringing in your items however is most convenient for you!

      Best,
      Jessica

    1. Hi Kevin,

      Thank you for inquiring!

As soon as we’re done with your bag, we’ll send you an email with your payout totals. You can choose between cash, in the form of either a Check or a PayPal Payout, or store credit, in the form of an In-Store Trade Card. Through Sell By Mail, we offer 25% of our selling price in cash or 50% in store credit.

  30. Hi there! How likely are you to buy vintage aka my husband and I cleaned out his grandmother’s closet and she has TONS of clothes in good condition, definitely in the vintage category. Or, are there places you could recommend in the Philly area if this isn’t something you would go for? Thank you!

    1. Hi Nicole,

Thanks for your interest in selling with us! We do buy in vintage, but we make selections based on the individual style and condition of each piece. We need to see the clothing in person to say whether or not we could take it, so we encourage you to bring in everything you have! If we’re able to purchase anything for the store, you’ll receive 30% of our selling price in cash or 50% in store credit. We buy all hours we’re open and there’s no appointment needed to sell – just bring along a valid ID. We hope to see you soon!

  31. Hi there. First time hearing about your company and store, I’m in NYC. I was wondering if you have places you recommend I take any of the items your store cannot take?

    1. Hi Stacy,

So glad you discovered us! For any clothing we’re unable to buy from you, we do offer donation bins that go to local non-profits. These occasionally fill up and we will have to stop accepting donations for a time, but they are generally an option. Let us know if you have further questions and thanks for selling with us!

  32. Do you accept clothing from Uniqlo?
Are there some brands you will accept only in stores and NOT via the sell by mail option? If so, can you list them? Thank you.

    1. Hi Sindy,

We do buy clothing Uniqlo, but we make all of our selections based on style and condition more so than brand. There aren’t specific brands that we only accept in the store. Through Sell By Mail, we’re unable to buy pieces from affordable department stores like Walmart, Kmart, Kohl’s, Sears or JCPenney. We’re not necessarily able to buy these brands in our stores, either, but we’re always happy to take a look at whatever you bring in! Thanks for your interest in selling with us – we hope to see you soon!

  33. Hi, I have some brand new women’s pajama pants that I have never worn and still have the tags on them. There is nothing wrong with them, I just ran out of time to return them from the store I originally bought them from. Do you ever accept things like this? I have not seen anything on the website about pajamas so I wasn’t sure.

    1. Hi Sydney,

Thanks for your interest in selling with us! We’re unable to buy in pajamas, but if you’re doing a general closet cleanout, we would love to see you in the store. Hope to see you soon!

    1. Hi Mon,

Though they’re great bras, we’re unable to buy any undergarments, new or used. We do sometimes take lacy bralettes that you would wear under a loose tank top. Hope to see you in the store soon!

    1. Hi Jessica,

We don’t generally buy a ton of swimwear, but some of our stores will buy it in brand new condition. We do buy the best of all seasons, all year round, so you’re welcome to bring in your summer items anytime – and feel free to throw the swimsuit in the bag. When in doubt, bring it in – we’re always happy to take a look. Hope to see you in the store soon!

  34. Hi, I am a larger guy that doesn’t have a whole lot of money and very few options for clothes. I wear between a 52-54 waist 30-32 length depending on how the pants are made. My problem is that most if not all stores, big and tall stores included do not carry much in the tall and fat department because no one wants to be known as the “Fat Store” If you did carry my size what is your average price, and remember I live on an $800.00 a month budget for everything from rent to bills to clothes. . .I don’t want to be paying $20 dollars for a used pair of jeans just because you know you can get that price. I can, when available, get new jeans and pants in my size for $10.00. Thank you

    1. Hi Timothy,

We try our best to be inclusive of all sizes, and our inventory is reliant on what our customers bring into our store. We pride ourselves on offering affordable, fairly priced clothing, but we couldn’t give you an exact price – all items are priced on a sliding scale based on style and condition. I’m unable to guarantee that we’d have exactly what you’re looking for, but we do encourage you to come in and take a look whenever you have the time. Thank you for your inquiry, and we hope to see you in the store soon!

    1. Hi Sami,

Thanks for your interest in selling with us. We’re generally unable to buy shoes that are missing their laces. If you can find a spare set to add them to the shoes, we’d be more than happy to take a look at them, but we will need to see them in person before we can say whether or not we can buy them for the store. Hope to see you soon!
