I wish this wasn’t such a corny cliché, but yes, I will happily call my mom my best friend. Her optimistic and confident personality has made me the way I am today. She is the most open-minded person I know and believes wholeheartedly in being your own person. Her view on individualism has created what she jokingly calls a “brat” who knows what she wants (i.e. me). From a young age, I started experimenting with my personal style and my mom let me wear whatever I wanted. From hairstyles to clothes to friends, she let me choose my own path and express myself the way I wanted. And yes, I blame her for every horrible fashion choice I made.
These Boots Were Made For Never Taking Off
Some kids had a favorite blanket, teddy bear or doll. Not me! I had my favorite boots. They were white Western boots that, in my mind, went with everything (even my Easter Sunday dress). My grandma constantly would try to get my mom to a) brush my hair and b) “take those dang cowboy boots off!” My mom would reply with something along the lines of, “Just let her be herself.” Of course, I don’t remember much of this. I will say, however, that I currently have a new pair of white cowboy boots that I wear regularly. Coincidence? I think not.
WHY2k Did You Let Me Wear This?
The white cowboy boot story may be cute, but as I got older and continued to express myself through my personal style, my fashion journey took on a slightly more embarrassing tone. BUT I think we can all agree that we made questionable fashion choices in the early 2000s, right? At that time, I started becoming obsessed with brands, logos and shopping at the mall. It started with Limited Too and then progressed to wanting an exclusively Hollister-filled wardrobe. My mom was not too thrilled about shopping at these stores because, well, they were more expensive than the secondhand stores we used to shop at before my mall-brat phase. However, she was patient with me and let me shop the Hollister sale section and even buy the occasional full-price pair of jeans!
New Style, Who Dis?
My mom’s patience paid off in the end though, because when I got to high-school, I discovered thrift shopping for myself. I realized it was a great way to find unique pieces that no one else had. My mom went from being reluctant to go shopping with me to being excited! She knew that I was still figuring out my personal style and thrift shopping was a great way for me to discover what it was (and on a budget, too!). Shopping secondhand allowed me to try out a wide variety of styles and trends, from boho/beach babe to Instagram-coffee-shop hipster to punk chick, all the way to who I am today! I discovered my personal style on my own, but I owe it to my mom for encouraging me to follow my own path and giving me the freedom to do so.
In the midst of switching up your own personal style? I recommend stopping by your local Buffalo Exchange to find new-to-you pieces that totally speak to your sense of style. Better yet, bring in your closet cleanout and you you could take home 30% back in cash or 50% in trade to spruce up your wardrobe. P.S. Need a fun Mom’s Day idea? Go resale shopping! You and your mom will both find something you love.

Drumroll, please…the final numbers are in! To all of you who stopped by our annual Earth Day $1 Day Sale on Saturday, April 20, we want to say a HUGE THANK YOU for helping us raise $52,628 for the Humane Society of the United States’ Animal Rescue Team! WOW! That’s the most money we’ve EVER raised from a $1 Day Sale. It’s also a whole lot of happy animals! We couldn’t have done it without you.
Teaming Up with the Animal Rescue Team
Every year, we hold an Earth Day $1 Day Sale on the Saturday closest to Earth Day at all of our stores (except outlets) and donate 100% of the proceeds to a deserving non-profit. This year, we teamed up with the HSUS’ Animal Rescue Team to help out animals in need!
Not only does the Animal Rescue Team save animals from abusive conditions like animal fighting operations and puppy mills – they recently rescued 84 Great Danes from an abusive breeder in New Hampshire – but they are also ready to deploy at a moment’s notice to help animals during natural disasters. During the 2017 hurricane season, the Animal Rescue Team helped more than 2,000 animals following Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. They do this by developing pet-friendly evacuation plans, moving pets out of harm’s way before a storm and performing emergency field rescues when needed.
Coats for Cubs
Thank you to everyone who donated their fur to our Coats for Cubs program as well! Every year from January 1 through Earth Day, we invite customers to drop off fur coats they no longer want at any of our stores and let us know they’re a donation to Coats for Cubs. We then ship them off the wildlife rehabilitators across the US, who use them to provide comfort to orphaned and injured wildlife. The rehabbers say that this speeds up their healing process. This year, we collected 2,002 furs, another record-breaking amount! Since taking this initiative over from The Humane Society in 2006, we have collected and distributed more than 15,108 furs.
Since starting the Earth Day $1 Day Sale in 1997, we’ve raised over $717,900 for a variety of different charities – and we couldn’t have done it without your help! Whether you’ve been to every $1 sale for the last 20 years or you’ve never been to one before, put it on your list for next year! Remember the special selection of $1 items goes quickly and that the sale is cash only. See you next April! Want to give back in the meantime? Just stop by your local Buffalo Exchange. Through our Tokens for Bags® program, we give out charity tokens instead of bags with each purchase that you can donate to one of three local non-profits!

Break out the swimsuits and get that away message drafted, because summer is almost here! After a long winter and a very sneezy and breezy spring, the warm weather has arrived – bringing with it a new crop of trends to try out. Whether you’re working through the summer or planning a month-long vacay, we compiled the styles you’ll want to stock in your closet. Read ahead for our favorite trends of the summer!
Tie Dye Hard
There’s nothing more fitting to be featured on a list of summer fashion trends than camp-favorite tie dye! Reminiscent of days spent swatting mosquitos by a lake, tie-dye has transformed into a runway-certified staple. Plus, it’s an easy way to extend the life of your favorite T-shirt: DIY your tee with a swirl of rainbow dye to rock with your denim and sneakers. For an evening look, try a tie-dye cotton or silk dress as an alternative to the LWD (little white dress). Finish off the look with white d’orsay heels and delicate gold jewelry.
